Author bio
Catherine Lee is an Australian crime writer whose books move between Sydney police investigations, coastal cozy mysteries, and more recent FBI thrillers. Her stories tend to begin with a body, a disappearance, or a person in danger, then follow investigators who refuse to leave loose ends alone.
Sydney is a major part of her early work. The city is the home turf of Detective Charlie Cooper, the homicide detective at the center of the Cooper and Quinn books. Lee uses its suburbs, waterfront businesses, parks, and crowded streets as places where private trouble can quickly become a public crime.
Her first Charlie Cooper novel, Dark Heart, arrived in 2013. It introduces Cooper at a difficult point in his life, facing the case of a dead serial killer and a final victim who may still be alive. The book also brings in Joey Quinn, Cooper’s new partner, and sets up the partnership that carries through the later novels.
The cases get personal.
In Dark Past, Cooper investigates a murder connected to a powerful Sydney family and old secrets. Dark Secrets looks at the devastating consequences behind a teenager’s apparent suicide, while Dark Chemistry puts science, public fear, and threats against a pharmaceutical company at the center of the investigation. Dark Edges turns to elite sport, and Dark Country takes Cooper out of the city for a brutal rural murder case.
Lee’s crime novels often use a topical question as part of the mystery. Her books have explored organ transplantation and cellular memory, family history, online harm, coercive control, animal activism, public health fears, and the pressure placed on young athletes. The focus stays on the people caught in those situations, especially victims and families looking for answers.
She later expanded Cooper’s world with Detective Bonnie Hunter. In Missing, Bonnie is pulled into the search for a woman who vanished during a weekend away, while Lost takes her back to the coastal bushland of her childhood for a case involving missing campers, a dead woman, and a troubled teenager. Bonnie is driven, angry at injustice, and still dealing with the weight of cases she could not fix.
Lee also writes the lighter Getaway Bay mysteries under the name Grace York. Those books follow widow Addison Lake after she moves to a Queensland beach town for a fresh start. Her plan to renovate a beach house becomes complicated by arson, suspicious deaths, eccentric neighbors, and an ever-growing circle of friends who are willing to help investigate.
The tone may change, but the thread stays the same: ordinary people are put under pressure, and somebody has to keep asking questions. Lee has also teamed up with Bill Duncan on the Eden Cross FBI mysteries, beginning with The Collector. Their work together broadens the setting to the United States while keeping the focus on investigators confronting dangerous offenders.
Lee lives and writes in Newcastle, Australia. She has described herself as a committed reader of crime fiction and a person equally happy with an ebook, a physical book, or a television series. When she is not writing, she has also mentioned walking her dog, though she admits fictional worlds often win out.
