Author bio
Catherine Bybee writes the kind of romances she once curled up with as an escape, full of second chances, big feelings, and just enough danger to keep readers turning pages. She is an American novelist whose books span contemporary romance, paranormal romance, romantic suspense, and women’s fiction, with millions of copies sold around the world.
She grew up in Washington State in a home that was often more turbulent than it should have been. As a teenager she barely scraped through high school and found refuge in the paperback romances she pulled from library shelves and grocery store racks. Those stories about hope and happy endings left a deep mark, and she has said more than once that romance novels helped her hang on when real life felt like too much.
Right after graduation she packed up and moved to Southern California chasing an acting dream. Between auditions she waited tables, learned how to read people fast, and discovered that the Hollywood grind was not the life she wanted. Trading scripts for textbooks, she went back to school, became a registered nurse, and spent years working in busy urban emergency rooms.
That career ended abruptly when a fall while transferring a patient severely injured her back. Multiple surgeries and a long recovery followed, along with the loss of the job that had defined her adult life. Stuck at home, in pain and restless, she opened a blank document and started writing the kind of story she loved to read, with stubborn heroines, decent but complicated heroes, and families that did not always look picture perfect.
Her early books were small press paranormal romances, including the Highland time travel adventures of the MacCoinnich family and the wolf shifter tales of the Ritter clan. Those stories let her play with magic, sword fights, and destined mates while still grounding the characters in everyday emotions like fear, loyalty, and the need to belong. They also taught her the nuts and bolts of publishing, one deadline and one revision at a time.
Everything changed with Wife by Wednesday, the first Weekday Brides novel. The book began as a twist on the marriage of convenience trope and grew into a bestselling contemporary series about an elite matchmaking agency, Alliance, and the extended family that forms around it. From there she went on to write connected series like First Wives and Richter, where the same bodyguards, investigators, and friends weave in and out of increasingly high stake stories.
At the same time she kept returning to quieter, small town settings. The Not Quite books, the River Bend trilogy Most Likely To, and the Creek Canyon novels all lean into everyday life, whether that is running a family hotel, rebuilding after wildfires and mudslides, or simply figuring out how to forgive the people who let you down. In newer series like The D’Angelos and The Heirs, close knit families, noisy dinners, and complicated inheritances give her characters plenty to fight for beyond romance alone.
Her background in nursing and emergency medicine shows up in the way she writes work. Her heroines are often nurses, therapists, chefs, business owners, or security professionals who are good at their jobs and exhausted by them. She tends to slip real world issues into the love stories, from child abuse and domestic violence to addiction, grief, and the long shadow of trauma, always steering the arc toward resilience.
Today she writes full time from Southern California, where she lives with her husband and their two sons. On the page she is still chasing the same feeling she reached for as a teenager in Washington, that moment when a story makes you believe that even after the worst day, love and a better life are still possible.
