Author bio
Catherine Bruns is an upstate New York writer whose books tend to mix murder with food, family, work, and a lot of very bad timing. She has said she wanted to be a writer from the time she was eight years old, when she finished her own version of Cinderella and realized that getting to the end of a story felt pretty great.
That impulse never really went away.
She studied English and Performing Arts, then spent time working as a newspaper reporter and press release writer. Those jobs gave her a useful foundation for mystery fiction. You can feel the reporter's instinct in the way her books keep moving, follow clues, and stay focused on the next important detail.
Real life has always been busy for Bruns, and that seems to feed the books instead of slowing them down. She lives in upstate New York with her husband, three sons, and a rotating cast of cats and dogs. Her stories often have that same lived-in feeling. People are cooking dinner, juggling work, managing relatives, and trying to hold a household together, even while a murder investigation is blowing up the week.
A lot of readers first meet her through Tastes Like Murder, the opening Cookies & Chance mystery. That series follows Sally Muccio, a divorced baker who comes home to western New York to open a novelty cookie shop, only to find that dead bodies and suspicious fortune cookies keep landing in her path. Readers who like food in their cozies, lively family banter, and a little romance usually do well there.
She has built several other mystery worlds, too. Killer Transaction begins the Cindy York books, centered on a real estate agent, wife, and mother who keeps stumbling into deadly property deals. For Sale by Killer later won the Daphne du Maurier Award for Mainstream Mystery/Suspense. In Penne Dreadful, Bruns shifts to a chef named Tessa Esposito, while A Doomful of Sugar introduces Leila Khoury and a Vermont maple farm still reeling from a father's murder.
Place matters a lot in her fiction.
Western New York, small-town Vermont, restaurant kitchens, bakeries, open houses, and even a Hawaiian resort all become working parts of the mystery instead of mere backdrops. Her sleuths are rarely polished detectives. They are bakers, agents, daughters, mothers, widows, and women trying to get through ordinary life without ignoring the very strange thing that just happened in front of them.
That may be the clearest thread across Bruns's work. The crimes matter, but so do the people solving them. Her books return again and again to family friction, friendship, fresh starts, and the awkward fact that trouble does not wait until life gets convenient.
She is also a member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime. These days, she is still writing from upstate New York, turning everyday jobs, community ties, and a steady flow of sweets into fast, funny, approachable mysteries.
