A Pose Before Dying

by Alex Erickson

2024

2

A Purrfect Date

by Alex Erickson

2025

Ashley agrees to a blind date that goes badly enough on its own, then the man turns up dead that same night. Hidden identities, awkward neighbors, and studio stress make the second Cat Yoga mystery nicely tangled.

Series background & context

The Cat Yoga Mystery books begin with a premise that sounds almost too cozy to fail: yoga classes, adoptable cats, and a brand new small business called A Purrfect Pose. Then Alex Erickson does the obvious thing and drops a body into the middle of it. The series follows Ashley Branson, who opens her studio in Cardinal Lake, Ohio, hoping to build something that feels like hers, not something chosen for her.

In A Pose Before Dying, Ashley is still finding her footing when a disliked college professor is discovered dead in the studio, locked in child's pose. The murder hits her from every angle. It threatens the business before it really has a chance to settle, and it puts her brother Hunter in the police spotlight. Right away the series makes clear that this is not just a cute gimmick setting. Ashley has something real to lose.

That tension gives the books their backbone.

The studio matters because it brings together two kinds of vulnerability at once. People come in hoping to relax, reset, or try something new. The cats are there to charm clients and find homes. Ashley is trying to create a calm space, but murder keeps turning it into a pressure cooker. That clash, wellness on the surface, chaos underneath, gives the series a nice rhythm. The books can be funny and warm, then suddenly tense when Ashley realizes how much trouble is sitting in plain view.

A Purrfect Date shows how the series can move beyond the studio without losing its identity. A bad blind date ends in homicide, and Ashley gets dragged into a mess of hidden identities, awkward neighbors, and tangled love lives. The mystery widens, but the emotional center stays the same. Ashley is still juggling business stress, family complications, and the fear that one ugly event could undo the new life she is trying to build.

The tone here is modern cozy with a little extra edge. Ashley is not a polished sleuth. She is a new owner, a sister, and a daughter trying to push back against old pressure, someone who keeps stumbling into situations that demand action. If you like cozy mysteries with cats, a fresh setting, and a heroine whose personal life is as active as the suspect list, this series has a lot of promise. The yoga theme keeps it light. The murder keeps it moving.
