Series background & context

The Cat the Cat books are built for very early readers, preschoolers, and kids who are just starting to recognize words on the page. The setup is simple and upbeat: Cat the Cat bounces into a scene, greets her friends, and invites the reader to join in.

The language is intentionally repetitive. Names repeat. Phrases repeat. The sentences are short enough that a child can start “reading along” after a couple of times through. At the same time, the books are lively, with lots of movement, sound effects, and chances for kids to answer out loud.

Kids tend to start responding before you finish the question.

Visually, the series uses bright, clear drawings and lots of open space. That helps brand-new readers keep track of what’s happening without getting overwhelmed by detail. It also makes the books great for group read-alouds, you can hold a page up and everyone can see who is speaking and what the joke is.

Each title focuses on a clear, kid-sized idea. In Cat the Cat Who Is That?, Cat meets lots of familiar friends and then bumps into someone new. Instead of turning the new character into a problem, the story treats curiosity as a reason to say hi. The other books keep that same warm tone while playing with different concepts: flying in Let's Say Hi to Friends Who Fly!, animal noises in What's Your Sound, Hound the Hound?, and bedtime routines in Time to Sleep, Sheep the Sheep!.

The humor is gentle and mostly comes from Cat’s confidence and the way her friends react. Some animals can do a thing, some can’t, and Cat stays delighted either way. That makes the books feel welcoming for kids who don’t always fit the expected script, whether they’re shy, still learning to talk, or just not in the mood to perform on command.

Reading order isn’t important here. Each book stands on its own, and families often pick based on what their kid is into right now: sounds, bedtime, or saying hello to everyone. If you want the cleanest introduction, starting with Cat the Cat Who Is That? makes sense because it establishes Cat’s world and her steady, friendly voice.

If you know Mo Willems from the Pigeon or Elephant & Piggie, the Cat the Cat books can feel like the earliest step on that same ladder. They’re simple without being flat, and they’re designed to be read again and again, until a child starts to feel like the words belong to them.
