Cat and a Playing Card Books in Order

The Cat and a Playing Card books are the earliest full Midnight Louie stories, restored and reissued after their original appearance in shortened paperback form. They come before Temple Barr takes center stage in the later mysteries, and they show Louie in a slightly different role. He is already smart, observant, and convinced of his own importance, but here he works more as a roaming house detective and mischievous cupid around the Crystal Phoenix hotel in Las Vegas.

That setup gives the quartet a romantic suspense shape. Each book follows a different couple caught in danger, attraction, and the peculiar pressures of Vegas life, while Louie slips through the background and, often, the foreground, nudging events where he can. The hotel becomes a crossroads where show business, old money, mob shadows, gamblers, runaways, and lonely people all bump into each other.

The recurring center of gravity is the Crystal Phoenix itself, along with Nicky Fontana and the orbit of people tied to the hotel. That makes the books feel linked even when the lead pair changes from one volume to the next. A shy writing student and her professor, a hard-edged cardsharp, a singer under threat, a tourist in over her head, they all enter the same glittering space and discover that Vegas can turn romance into risk very quickly.

Louie is the thread that holds it together. He is not yet the fully developed sleuthing narrator of the later alphabet books, but the essential ingredients are already there. He prowls, he judges, he interferes, and he notices what humans miss. Douglas is also already experimenting with the blend that would become one of her signatures, mystery, wit, romance, and a setting where image and danger are always tangled together.

If you come to these books after the main Midnight Louie series, they read like a look back at the cat's origin story. If you start here, they work as lively romantic suspense novels with a very unusual observer slipping between lovers, suspects, and schemes. Either way, they show the series being born, one pawprint at a time.
