The supporting cast gives Shelby both help and headaches. Her aunt, Edie, anchors the store side of her life. Castle caretaker Matthew Kessler carries his own complicated local history. Coast Guard Investigative Services agent Zack Griffin adds tension, attraction, and occasional friction. Police Chief Tekla Stone is not thrilled when Shelby starts poking around, which is exactly what Shelby keeps doing.

Place does a lot of work here.

The Thousand Islands setting brings in water, weather, tourist season rhythms, island logistics, and a touch of local legend. That makes the mysteries feel a little more contained and a little more atmospheric than the average small-town cozy, while still staying warm and readable.
