Cass Neary Books in Order

The Cass Neary novels are dark crime stories about a photographer who has spent much of her life looking straight at things other people prefer not to see. Cass made a name for herself in 1970s New York, documenting the punk scene, then watched that brief success slip away. By the time Generation Loss begins, she is older, broke, blunt, and carrying plenty of bad history.

She is not built to make anyone comfortable.

In the first book, Cass takes an assignment on the Maine coast, where a reclusive photographer and a remote island community pull her into an old mystery. The setting matters. Hand uses isolated homes, harsh weather, long drives, and the closed ranks of small communities to create pressure around Cass, who is already prone to making risky choices.

The later books widen the map without making Cass any safer. Available Dark takes her from Helsinki to Reykjavik, into the worlds of photography, black metal, and old wounds that have not healed. Hard Light moves through London and rural England, with Cass searching for someone she cares about while powerful people close in. In The Book of Lamps and Banners, an ancient illuminated manuscript becomes the center of a dangerous deal.

Each novel works as a crime story, but the ongoing thread is Cass herself. She has a photographer’s eye, a rough sense of humor, and a stubborn refusal to behave like a tidy detective hero. She drinks too much, trusts unevenly, and often knows exactly how bad an idea is before following it anyway. That makes the books tense, but it also makes her human.

Art is never just decoration here. Photographs, music, books, and performances carry clues, memories, debts, and obsessions. The people Cass meets are often artists or survivors of art scenes that burned hot and left plenty of wreckage behind. Hand gives the series a noir mood, but the emotional stakes come from what people will do to protect their work, their myths, or their version of the past.
