Theodora Rudan wakes injured, covered in blood, and missing ten years of memory, with only whispers of a prophecy that has people willing to sacrifice her to fulfill it. Unsure whom to trust among a betrothed stranger, a dream warrior, and her own mother, she must piece together her past before it kills her.
Series background & context
Under the Cascadian Chronicles banner you will find Meghan Ciana Doidge’s earliest epic-fantasy world, set long after magic has remade the earth. In these stories, “spirit” rose a thousand years earlier in an apocalyptic event and swept away the old order, leaving a landscape of city-states, prophecies, and blood-bound power struggles.
Spirit Binder introduces this world through Theodora Rudan, a young woman who wakes severely injured, covered in blood, and missing ten years of her life. Born under a prophecy that different factions interpret in violently incompatible ways, Theo suddenly finds herself surrounded by people who either want to sacrifice her, control her, or claim to love her. Piecing together her lost decade becomes as dangerous as any external enemy, especially when the truth about her own bloodline comes into focus.
Where the Adept Universe leans contemporary and often playful, Cascadian tales are moodier and more overtly epic. Politics and religion intertwine with personal loyalties. Prophecies can be both burden and weapon. Theo’s struggle is as much about choosing which version of herself to believe as it is about surviving would-be saviors and assassins.
Time in this world is elastic, and the setting supports stories across different generations. The young adult novel Time Walker is set ten years after the events of Spirit Binder and follows Beth, an adoptive daughter of that earlier generation. A talented sneak in a family of elementals, Beth has never seen her cleverness as particularly heroic until devastation strikes a city and her siblings start disappearing. When her ability to slip past locks and into forbidden places becomes the only hope of saving them, she also has to face a more frightening adversary: the parts of herself she would rather ignore.
Across both books, the Cascadian Chronicles explore how people live in the long shadow of world-ending events. The magic is visceral and often bloody, but the heart of the series lies in family bonds, questions of destiny versus self-determination, and the cost of being the person prophecy points at. Readers who like their fantasy a little harsher and more mythic than the cupcake-laced streets of Vancouver will find a different side of Doidge’s storytelling here.
