Author bio
Carrie Elks writes contemporary romance with a strong pull toward family, second chances, and the messy parts of falling in love when life is already complicated.
She studied political science and, by her own account, left college at twenty-one with a degree, some debt, and a soon-to-be husband. She has also lived in the UK, Switzerland, and the United States, which helps explain why her books can feel both rooted and restless. Her characters often know where home is, but they are not always sure what to do when they get there.
Writing came early. Finishing came later.
In interviews, Elks has said she had been writing since childhood, but did not complete a full project until her thirties. The turning point seems to have been finding a regular writing habit and an online community of writers and readers who pushed her to keep going. Once she started finishing books, the momentum stuck.
Her first novel, Fix You, helped put her on the map. It was later translated into eight languages, which is a pretty striking result for a debut. From there she built out a body of work that moves comfortably between city romance, small-town stories, sibling series, and holiday books, while keeping the same emotional core.
That emotional core matters.
Readers who pick up Summer's Lease, Let Me Burn, Take Me Home, Welcome To Winterville, or Strictly Business will notice a few familiar pleasures. Elks likes people with history. She likes siblings who meddle, friends who become anchors, exes who are not fully finished with the past, and communities where everybody is somehow connected. Her books are romantic, but they are also interested in grief, rebuilding, forgiveness, and what happens after the first big mistake.
A lot of her most loved work leans into place. Angel Sands gives her a sunny California beach town full of firefighters, doctors, business owners, and returning locals. Hartson's Creek brings in musicians, athletes, and a big, noisy family. Winterville turns Christmas into a whole setting, with snow, cabins, town traditions, and plenty of forced proximity. Even when the stories are light on the surface, there is usually a real emotional bruise underneath.
She also has a knack for writing romance that feels easy to binge. One side character pops up, then gets a book of their own. One family branch leads to the next. Before long you are not just reading a couple's story, you are settling into a whole fictional neighborhood.
These days, Elks lives with her husband, two children, and a black pug named Plato. When she is not writing or reading, she has said she enjoys baking, a glass of wine now and then, and time online chatting with readers. That mix, homey, funny, and a little chaotic, feels very much in tune with the books she writes.
