Caelestis Books in Order

The Caelestis books are Locke's branch of the larger Paradisi Chronicles universe, but they read like a focused story of their own. Humanity has fled a damaged Earth and built a new society on the planet New Eden, also called Ddaera, in the Paradisi system. The ten Founding Families hold power there, proud of the world they have made. The problem is that the planet was never empty. The native Ddaerans were already there, and their bond with the world around them changes everything.

At the center of the series is Mei Lin Yu, a descendant of one of those Founding Families. When Between Mountain and Sea opens, she does not feel at home in the polished, controlled world she has inherited. A stay at Mynyddamore in western Caelestis brings her closer to the Ddaerans, to the legacy of her ancestor Mabel Yu, and to family secrets that were meant to stay buried. From there the story grows steadily larger. What begins as one young woman's search for belonging turns into a struggle over history, power, and the future of an entire province.

This is science fiction, but it is built on people first.

Mei Lin is joined by some memorable companions, especially Silence, the sentient snowcat, and Jaxon McCaffrey, whose own relationship to time, place, and loyalty is complicated from the start. As the series moves through Under Two Moons, Through Ddaera's Touch, Tides of Acerba, and Where the Glassflowers Grow, the stakes shift from family conflict and hidden truths to resistance, leadership, and the hard work of deciding what a more just society could look like. Mei Lin keeps getting pushed toward responsibility she never asked for.

The tone blends coming-of-age storytelling, adventure, and political tension. There is worldbuilding here, but it is not dry or technical. The landscapes matter, from the mountains to the Sapphire Sea, and so does the way Ddaera itself seems to shape the people who live on it. Questions of colonization, inheritance, ecology, and trust run through the books, yet the writing stays accessible and character led. Even when the scale gets bigger, the story keeps returning to home, kinship, and the cost of choosing your own path.

It starts with family secrets and does not stay small.

This series works best in order, because Mei Lin's journey builds from book to book. Aelwyd also makes a nice side door into the setting, since it shows what arrival on New Eden felt like for an earlier generation. If you like science fiction that cares as much about identity and community as it does about setting, Caelestis offers a thoughtful, steadily widening story.
