Butch Bliss Books in Order

The Butch Bliss series is Mark Teppo's sun-baked, wisecracking crime fiction, published under the name Harry Bryant. Its hero is Robert "Butch" Bliss, a former adult-film performer and former prisoner who has come out the other side of a long sentence with fewer illusions and a strong instinct for helping people in trouble.

Butch's past is never treated as a cheap joke. A cocaine charge, a harsh sentence, and years behind bars taught him what it means to be ignored by systems that are supposed to protect people. Once free, he settles into a modest life in Southern California and makes himself useful by doing favors for those who have nowhere else to turn.

He is not a private investigator. He is simply willing to ask questions other people avoid.

That makes Butch a natural guide through a California full of old movie-business connections, roadside businesses, family stores, biker gangs, crooked agents, drug money, and people with polished public faces hiding private problems. He can be patient, observant, and unexpectedly calm. He can also be very hard to intimidate.

The series begins with the novella In & Out, then reaches its main starting point in Hidden Palms. In that novel, Butch is asked to find a woman connected to his former life, a favor that takes him toward a secluded retreat and into a conflict involving rogue law enforcement, motorcycle gangs, and a drug operation. Snake Road keeps him in the orbit of California's criminals and strivers. In Hard Promises, a convenience-store robbery exposes a grudge from prison and puts the people closest to Butch at risk.

Each book works as a brisk crime story, but reading in order gives the strongest sense of Butch's history and his growing ties to the people around him. His relationship with the Chow family, especially, helps keep the series from becoming only a parade of cases and gunmen.

The tone is tough but not grim.

Teppo gives the stories a throwback private-eye feel while keeping their humor and emotional stakes close to the ground. Butch is a man who wants a peaceful life, knows he is unlikely to get one, and still turns up when someone needs help. That combination of patience, loyalty, and reluctant toughness is what carries the series from one bad situation to the next.
