It is also about the younger generation, especially Benjy and Camden Terry, who are trying to hold on to feeling in the middle of adult bitterness. The books care a lot about loyalty, but they are just as interested in what loyalty can cost.

The second book, Daughter of Bugle Ann, comes back to the same world through Little Lady, Bugle Ann's daughter. The sequel is smaller and gentler, but it still works with the same material: pride, unfinished love, old hurts, and the way an animal can carry history from one household to another. Little Lady becomes a link between the past trouble and the chance, maybe, of putting some of it right.

The Missouri hills matter here. Kantor writes them as a place of beauty, hard work, and long memory. If you pick up this series, expect lean storytelling, strong feeling, regional speech, and a mix of tenderness and trouble. The first book was adapted into a 1936 film, which makes sense, because these stories are built on vivid scenes and clear emotional stakes.
