Author bio
Bryan Davis was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1958 and grew up in the eastern United States. Long before he became known for dragon fantasy and science fiction, he was the kid who taught himself to read before school and kept reaching for stories, theology, poetry, and humor. That wide reading life shows up in his books, which often mix action with bigger questions about courage, sacrifice, and faith.
He did not start out as a full-time novelist.
Davis graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in industrial engineering and spent more than twenty years as a computer professional. That mix of logic and imagination fits his fiction surprisingly well. Even when he is writing about dragons, portals, or parallel worlds, the stories tend to run on clear rules, practical problems, and characters who have to think their way through danger.
Then one dream changed everything.
He has said the spark for Raising Dragons came from dreaming about a boy who could breathe fire. He talked through the idea with his oldest son, James, wrote an early version, and then kept rewriting. The road to publication was slow. He received more than 200 rejections before the book finally found a home in 2004, after years of revision. That stubbornness became part of his story too.
Readers usually meet Davis through Raising Dragons, the opening book in the Dragons in Our Midst world. It introduces Billy Bannister and Bonnie Silver, two teens with dragon heritage hidden inside ordinary life. From there the story grows into Oracles of Fire and Children of the Bard, series that widen the scope from modern-day secrets to ancient prophecies, alternate worlds, and spiritual battles. Fans often like the mix of fast plots, loyal friendships, family bonds, and a strong moral center.
He did not stop with dragons.
Davis has also written the space adventure Search for the Astral Dragon, the dystopian Reapers, the portal-and-multiverse story Time Echoes, and the Starlight books, which pair dragon fantasy with slavery, resistance, and rescue missions across worlds. Even when the settings change, certain things stay the same. His heroes are usually young people under pressure. They are asked to act bravely before they feel ready. And the story keeps pushing them toward sacrifice, mercy, and hope.
Some plain facts help show how widely his books have traveled. Several titles have appeared on bestseller lists, and Eye of the Oracle reached number one on a Christian booksellers young adult list in January 2007. Over time, his fiction has found a lasting audience among teen readers, homeschool families, church readers, and adults who still like a good portal fantasy.
These days Davis lives in western Tennessee with his wife, Susie, and family life still seems central to what he does. He and Susie have seven children, and she has worked with him as an editor. He has also taught at writing conferences and conventions, which makes sense for an author who spent years learning the hard way and now likes helping other writers along.
If you read across his career, the through line is pretty easy to spot. Bryan Davis likes big adventure, but he likes purpose just as much. His books ask what people do with fear, power, grief, loyalty, and grace. That is probably why readers who start with Raising Dragons often keep going for a long time.
