Brown Ears

by Stephen R Lawhead

1988

Brown Ears is a floppy, much loved toy rabbit who travels everywhere with Ross, until one night he is accidentally left behind on a bus. As Ross grieves at home, Brown Ears wanders through strange places and new friendships on a long journey back to his boy.

Series background & context

The Brown Ears books grew out of the stories Lawhead told his own children about a much loved toy rabbit that kept going missing. They are short chapter books aimed at younger readers and family read aloud time, blending mild peril with a warm sense of security.

In Brown Ears: The Adventures of a Lost and Found Rabbit, we meet Brown Ears himself, a floppy, soft toy with drooping ears, dangly legs, and a bobbly head. His owner, Ross, takes him everywhere. On the way home from a family holiday, Brown Ears is accidentally left behind on a night bus. The story follows his wanderings and the boy’s grief and hope as they are separated, each chapter ending on just enough of a cliffhanger to keep listeners begging for “one more.”

Brown Ears at Sea picks up after Brown Ears has settled into his new home with Ross. A day at the beach goes sideways when the tide turns and carries the rabbit out into open water. Once again he is swept into a series of adventures, meeting new friends and facing new dangers before he can be reunited with the child who loves him.

What makes these stories stand out is not complicated plotting but emotional honesty handled at a child’s level. Brown Ears is never sarcastic or world weary; he is simply bewildered, brave in small ways, and always longing for home. Ross’s sadness at losing his toy is treated gently and seriously, giving parents a way to talk about attachment, loss, and reassurance.

The riverbanks, buses, harbors, and homes Brown Ears passes through are drawn in simple, vivid strokes that invite young imaginations to fill in the rest. By the time the rabbit makes it back into Ross’s arms, readers have walked with him through storms and strangers’ houses and discovered that being loved can make even a small stuffed animal feel heroic.

For families, the Brown Ears books are designed to be read aloud over several evenings, each short chapter turning the page toward the next adventure. They sit comfortably alongside classic lost toy tales and can become the sort of story children want to revisit when they misplace a favorite stuffed friend of their own.
