Series background & context

The Brock and Poole novels are contemporary British police procedurals centered on Detective Chief Inspector Harry Brock and Detective Sergeant Dave Poole. Most of the action takes place in London and its surrounding areas, where a seemingly contained death can quickly open into a larger web of fraud, family conflict, hidden affairs, professional grudges, or organized crime.

Brock is an old-school detective with a blunt manner and a healthy suspicion of shortcuts. He has years of experience, a strong sense of what does and does not ring true, and little patience for people trying to manage an investigation for their own comfort. Poole is his trusted colleague, someone who can keep the work moving while also dealing with Brock's habits and sharp edges.

Their cases are built around procedure.

A body may turn up in a park, an airport car park, a private flat, a suburban home, or an unexpected corner of the city. Brock and Poole start with the practical questions. Who was the victim? Who had access? What is the alibi worth? What detail has been overlooked? The answers usually lead beyond the first obvious suspect and into people who have been lying for reasons both large and small.

The series starts with Working Girl and can be read in publication order, which lets readers see the working relationship between Brock and Poole develop over time. The individual investigations are generally self-contained, so later entries such as Gunrunner, Exit Stage Left, Deadlock, and Naked Flames can also work as accessible entry points. Starting at the beginning is still the best option for readers who enjoy returning to a familiar team.

London matters here, but it is not treated as a postcard setting. Ison uses its neighborhoods, commuter routes, businesses, airports, parks, and changing communities as part of the police work. Cases can also pull the detectives beyond the capital when a victim's past or a criminal connection points elsewhere.

The tone is steady rather than flashy. There is danger, but the books spend time on interviews, records, contradictions, and the patient work needed to turn suspicion into proof. Brock's dry reactions and the banter within the team keep the stories from becoming too grim.

These are mysteries for readers who like a solid case, a grounded police team, and the satisfaction of watching a careful investigation sort out a messy set of secrets.
