Author bio
Brenda Hiatt was born in Washington, D.C., and is originally from Virginia. She studied biology and psychology at the College of William and Mary, then did graduate work at Texas A&M. That is not the usual path into romance writing, which is part of what makes her career interesting.
For a while, fiction was not the plan at all.
In 1988, Hiatt was an Army wife at home with two preschool children when she made herself a practical deal: sell a book before her youngest started first grade, or go find a real job. She hit that deadline by about six months and sold her first Regency romance to Harlequin. It was an early sign of something readers still notice in her books, she likes a clear goal, a little pressure, and characters who have to act.
Those early novels helped establish her range. She wrote traditional Regencies such as Gabriella and Lord Dearborn's Destiny, then moved into bigger historical romances with books like Scandalous Virtue, Rogue's Honor, and Ship of Dreams. Later, she added Bridge Over Time, a time-slip romance, and Out of Her Depth, a mystery. She did not stay in one lane for long.
That variety matters, but so does the thread running through it. Hiatt tends to write capable heroines, hidden identities, romantic complications with real momentum, and settings that give the story something extra to push against. Sometimes that means Regency London ballrooms. Sometimes it means a ship in danger, a scuba trip gone wrong, or a tiny Indiana town hiding very large secrets.
Then came Starstruck, her young adult science fantasy series. It starts with a shy astronomy geek in small-town Indiana and grows into a bigger story about soul bonds, Martian secrets, friendship, danger, and first love. Readers who find Hiatt through those books often stay for the fast pace and emotional pull, then work backward to discover that her historical romances have that same restless energy.
She likes characters in transition.
A widow testing her freedom, a supposed nobody discovering her real importance, a horse trainer protecting her family, a former spy chasing a traitor, a woman rebuilding her life after heartbreak. Across very different genres, Hiatt returns again and again to people who are forced out of the life they expected and have to figure out who they are next.
Her publishing path changed, too. After working with Harlequin, Avon, and HarperCollins, she eventually moved into independent publishing as rights to earlier books returned to her. That let her bring older novels back into print, sometimes under revised titles, while also continuing newer work in the Starstruck universe.
Off the page, she has also been a steady presence in the writing community. She served as president of Novelists, Inc. in 2006, taught online writing courses, moderated a weekly AOL Novel Workshop for twenty years, and became widely known for collecting and sharing data about writers' earnings so other authors could make better business decisions.
She also sounds like someone who does not sit still for long. On her site she talks about scuba diving, Taekwondo, hiking, travel, and reading, and those interests fit the books. Even her romances usually have some motion in them.
Hiatt has lived in several places over the years and is now based in Key Largo, Florida. After writing across Regency romance, historical adventure, time travel, mystery, and teen science fantasy, she still seems drawn to the same idea: ordinary life gets a lot more interesting when secrets come to light and people decide to be braver than they expected.
