Series background & context
The series listed here as Breathless/Crushed Hearts is essentially one tightly linked romance told across three books: Unfair Love, Broken Dawn, and Awaking Trust. Some editions use the later series name Crushed Hearts, but the core story stays the same. This is Sebastian and Raffael's relationship from the first shock of attraction to the slower, harder work of building trust after the ground has shifted under both of them.
It starts with a street race, and from there everything gets personal fast.
Raffael is the controlled one, an Icelandic street racer living in London, studying architecture, and clinging to rules that make life feel manageable. Sebastian arrives as the dangerous interruption. He is confident, open about what he wants, and patient enough to keep pushing without quite letting go. When a lost car, a risky bargain, and an unexpected kiss yank Raffael out of his usual script, the real conflict of the series snaps into focus: not whether there is chemistry, but whether Raffael can bear what that chemistry means.
The London setting gives the books their pulse. Nights are filled with illegal races, clubs, late drives, and private rooms where bravado is easier than honesty. During the day, both men still have ordinary lives to manage, friends to face, and versions of themselves they have spent years maintaining. That contrast matters. These are not huge external-plot romances where a villain must be defeated. The tension comes from secrecy, identity, pride, fear, and the stubborn ways people protect themselves when they want something that could change everything.
The emotional speed is slower than the physical spark, and that is the whole point.
Unfair Love throws the match. Broken Dawn deepens the push and pull as desire becomes harder to deny. Awaking Trust deals with the fallout, the hurt, and the choice to keep fighting or walk away. If you like new adult romance that mixes heat with a genuinely messy emotional arc, this series does that well. It is intense, intimate, and very character-led, with cliffhangers that nudge you straight into the next book. Read it for the tension, stay for the patience Sebastian shows and the way Raffael slowly learns to stop hiding from himself.
