In Roses in Amber, Murphy turns toward Beauty and the Beast territory, but she keeps the book grounded in family upheaval and social loss before the enchantment fully takes over. Amber is not dropped into a fairy-tale machine on page one. She is a girl whose world narrows, whose family falls, and whose love of roses leads her into something older and stranger than she expected. That slower entrance gives the fantasy weight.

Wintergate works a little differently. Its lead, Emilia, has been shaped by duty for years, standing watch over the one gate that still opens between worlds. By the time the story starts, the magic is already tied up with sacrifice, routine, and grief. That makes the emotional pull less about discovery and more about whether a person can keep living inside a role that has frozen her in place.

The tone across this series is fairy-tale, but not flimsy. The books tend to be romantic without going soft, and magical without losing sight of practical consequences. Murphy likes old story shapes, beasts, queens, gates, curses, impossible bargains, but she writes them through people who still have to carry bodies, memories, and obligations through the day.

If you like retellings that keep the bones of the original tale while building a more lived-in setting around them, Border Kingdom does that well. The series is less interested in novelty for its own sake than in asking what familiar stories feel like when people have to survive inside them. That gives these books a slightly melancholy edge, and it is a good one.
