Series background & context

The Books of Mortals trilogy, written by Ted Dekker with Tosca Lee, takes the spiritual stakes of the Dekkerverse and drops them into a stark, post‑apocalyptic future. It’s part dystopian thriller, part extended parable about what it means to be truly alive.

Centuries before the story opens, a catastrophic event and a mysterious Order stripped humanity of all emotions except fear. People function, but they don’t really live; they’re more like gray shadows going through motions. A secret group preserves the memory of another way and guards a vial of blood that can awaken love, joy, and pain.

In Forbidden, a young man named Rom Sebastian stumbles onto that blood and takes a risk that changes everything. When he and a handful of others drink, they become the first “Mortals” in a dead world—people who feel again. That awakening puts them at odds with the Order’s ruler and his ambitious heir, Saric, who sees emotion as both threat and weapon.

Mortal jumps forward in time. A boy named Jonathan, infused with the original blood in the womb, has grown up as a kind of prophesied savior, carrying life in its purest form. Factions form around him, betrayals crack the fragile community of Mortals, and new hybrid beings called Dark Bloods blur lines between life and corruption.

In Sovereign, the struggle narrows to a remnant. The Order is tightening its grip, Dark Bloods rule cities, and only a handful of Sovereigns cling to Jonathan’s way of self‑giving love. Secrets about the origin of the virus, the blood, and the true nature of life come to light as they face a final choice between survival at any cost and trust that looks like defeat.

The trilogy is separate enough to be read on its own, but fans of the Books of History Chronicles will notice familiar motifs: sacred blood, a small band of awakened people, and the question of whether fear or love will define humanity. This page lays out the reading order, touches on the prequel novella The Keeper, and suggests how to slot the series into a full Dekker read for maximum impact.
