Series background & context

The Books by the Bay Mysteries are set in Oyster Bay, a fictional coastal town in North Carolina where tourists, retirees, and a few hiding celebrities all share the same boardwalk. At the center of it all is Olivia Limoges, a wealthy restaurateur with a guarded heart and a devoted standard poodle named Captain Haviland.

Olivia grew up in Oyster Bay but left after family tragedy. When she returns years later, she brings money, a sleek restaurant, and an unfinished novel. Locals gossip about her reserve, mistaking shyness and grief for snobbery. Her world begins to open when she is coaxed into joining the Bayside Book Writers, a small critique group of would be authors who quickly become both friends and partners in crime solving.

In the first book, a killer leaves haiku poems beside the bodies of local victims. The fact that every suspect seems to have a way with words makes the case painfully close to the writers’ circle. Later mysteries draw on the town’s festivals, historic sites, and arts scene. A body buried on the beach is linked to a string of cliché themed burglaries. A bestselling novelist renting a cottage ends up strangled. A local woman known as the Witch of Oyster Bay is found dead soon after predicting disaster. A storytelling retreat turns deadly for its star performer. A time capsule unveiling and a lavish garden party hide secrets that someone will kill to protect.

Across the series, Olivia’s character slowly thaws. She builds a complicated, satisfying relationship with Police Chief Sawyer Rawlings, wrestles with questions about her father’s fate, and wrestles with how much of herself she is willing to share with her new friends. Other Bayside Book Writers face marriages in trouble, health scares, and career setbacks, so the club’s meetings are as much about mutual care as about plot structure.

The books blend bookish trivia, coastal atmosphere, and twisty whodunits. Readers get descriptions of writing exercises and critique sessions, but also plates of fresh seafood, harbor walks with Haviland, and late night conversations in the local bar. Adams often uses the members’ manuscripts and the town’s own legends as mirrors for the crimes they are investigating.

While each mystery stands alone, the emotional arcs build from one volume to the next. Longtime readers see the writers’ careers shift, romances mature, and old traumas come into focus. Newcomers can jump in with almost any title, but starting at the beginning gives the full effect of watching Olivia, her dog, and her motley circle of authors grow into a chosen family on the Carolina coast.
