Series background & context

Bob Burke is the engine that powers William F. Brown's biggest run of action thrillers. On the surface, Burke looks easy to overlook, a slight, mild-mannered telecommunications executive with a business life to manage. Under that surface is something else entirely: a former Army Ranger and Delta Force commander with a gift for planning, patience, and sudden violence when the situation calls for it.

That contrast is the hook.

The series opens with Burke's War, where Bob sees a murder from the window of a plane coming into Chicago and decides he is not going to let it go just because the police think the story sounds impossible. From there, the books keep widening his world. Mob enforcers, corrupt officials, terrorists, kidnappers, Russian operators, Chinese spies, and cartel figures all take turns learning the same lesson, that Bob Burke may look like the wrong man to fear, right up until he is absolutely the right one.

One of the pleasures of the series is that Burke never works alone for long. Brown surrounds him with a trusted circle of old soldiers, tech people, family, and friends, the kind of crew that can shift from barbecue banter to a full rescue mission without much warning. The books often refer to Burke's "Merry Men" and his computer-minded "Geeks," and that gives the series some welcome warmth. Even when the action gets heavy, there is a sense of loyalty and team rhythm holding things together.

The settings do real work too. Chicago, Atlantic City, North Carolina, Moscow, Beijing, Armenia, Mexico, Las Vegas, and more all become part of the machinery of the plot. Brown likes movement, and he likes missions that spread across several layers at once, local crime, national security, and personal payback. A Burke book might begin with a casino debt, a kidnapping, or a bombing, then grow into something much larger before the last act arrives.

If someone hits his people first, Burke takes it personally.

The tone is fast, direct, and built for readers who enjoy competent heroes under fire. There is plenty of military detail, but the books are not dry. Brown also leans into humor, recurring relationships, and the fact that Burke has a home life worth defending. That matters. These are not abstract save-the-world stories. Even when the stakes are international, the series keeps returning to friendship, marriage, family, and the cost of bringing battlefield instincts back into civilian life.

As the books go on, the threats get bigger, but the basic appeal stays steady. Burke plans, absorbs the hit, gathers his people, and goes on offense. Whether he is dealing with the mob, the Kremlin, a Chinese intelligence problem, or a cartel revenge plot, readers know they are getting a mix of strategy, gunfire, travel, and old-fashioned payback.

If you want the full arc, start with Burke's War and keep going in order. That is the best way to watch Burke's world expand, and to see how Brown balances relentless action with a cast that keeps readers coming back.
