Blue Moon Investigations: Boston books in chronological order
Series background & context
Blue Moon Investigations: Boston follows Chloe Mayfield, a career police officer whose professional life takes an unexpected turn after a prominent operation goes wrong. She is reassigned to the Boston Police Department's supernatural division, a place she doesn't initially see as the center of serious police work. What she finds there forces her to reconsider both the assignment and the kind of world she is investigating.
The unwanted posting comes with genuine danger.
Chloe's position gives this branch of Blue Moon a different starting point from a private detective's agency. She has an established career and a police role, but those credentials don't mean she is prepared for every threat the division faces. Entering a specialist unit also means confronting its reputation and the assumptions that came with her transfer. Her determination to do the work matters as much as the official authority she carries into an investigation.
The sequence begins with Drowned Harbor, followed by Massacre Site and Night Shroud. Boston provides a city setting for a hidden layer of supernatural activity, making familiar streets and institutions part of a much less familiar problem. The series includes threats associated with witches and a cult, so Chloe can't approach every case as though a conventional motive or method will explain it completely. She must discover the rules of a world she hadn't known existed while people are already at risk.
The tone combines supernatural action with police investigation and sharp humor. Chloe's forceful response to danger keeps the story active, while the mismatch between her expectations and her assignment gives it friction. Being placed among people she had reason to underestimate doesn't remove her ambition or her ability to challenge what is in front of her. Instead, the posting tests whether she can adapt those qualities to circumstances where ordinary experience may only take her part of the way.
Read Drowned Harbor first for Chloe's introduction and her move into the supernatural division, then continue in order through its developing cases. Readers drawn to a capable protagonist entering an unfamiliar professional world will find that transition central to the series. The Boston branch offers an entry into Blue Moon with its own investigator, urban atmosphere, and institutional pressures. Across the books, Chloe's task is to keep investigating when the explanation becomes stranger, make use of colleagues and knowledge she might once have dismissed, and protect a city whose residents may know very little about the forces threatening them. Her assignment may have begun as a setback, but it demands her full attention.
