Series background & context

Blue Moon Australia follows Darius Kane, a paranormal investigator working on Australia's Gold Coast. He takes cases that other people don't want to touch, putting apparently impossible events beside very practical concerns about clients, bills, and staying alive. The series brings the wider Blue Moon approach to an Australian setting, with suspicion from the police and threats from criminals adding to the difficulty of his work.

An unusual case is still a job he needs to finish.

Darius's first investigation involves the murder of a local mechanic and other suspicious deaths that may be connected. The suggestion of a ghost makes the problem stranger, but it doesn't remove the need to work out what happened. His role puts him between clients looking for an explanation and people who would rather he stop asking questions. Whether the immediate obstacle seems supernatural or criminal, he has to make decisions with consequences beyond a tidy answer on paper.

The coastal setting becomes especially important in Sirens and Sea Monsters. A missing swim coach pulls his attention toward the sea and whatever may be beneath its surface. The water is therefore more than scenery associated with a holiday destination. It can conceal evidence and danger, leaving Darius to investigate a place that resists ordinary access. His need to keep working also means he can't simply abandon a bizarre claim because it sounds unlikely at first.

Wizard of Aus continues the sequence with an escaped prisoner whose abilities seem to defeat the police's normal response. The story also brings Patricia Fisher into Darius's orbit, connecting this branch with another part of Steve Higgs's fiction. Those links don't erase Darius's own problems: he still has an investigation to pursue and people whose actions can put him in danger. The series blends supernatural action, a detective's questions, and the friction of a man working outside the safest professional boundaries.

Begin at the start of the Australia sequence before moving to Sirens and Sea Monsters and Wizard of Aus. That order introduces Darius's circumstances and makes later references to his earlier troubles easier to follow. The books suit readers who like their paranormal mysteries energetic, with a protagonist who has immediate reasons to take the next case even when it promises more difficulty than profit. Across the adventures, his challenge is to distinguish what clients believe from what is actually happening and survive long enough to do something useful with the answer, while the Gold Coast keeps producing work that won't fit a normal job description.
