Series background & context
Crissy Smith's Bloodlines series takes place in Las Vegas, where a hidden agency known as the Organization protects both humans and supernatural beings. Its agents come from old bloodlines connected to the first families who took on that duty. Humans, shifters, and Day Walkers work side by side, usually without recognition from the people whose lives they protect.
The series opens with Bite, which introduces Kieran Smith, a sharp-edged Day Walker with a troubled past, and Dakota Reese, a jaguar shifter and third-generation Organization agent. Kieran arrives in Las Vegas expecting little more than an unwanted break, then finds trouble, a possible connection with Dakota, and old dangers that have not forgotten him.
Their city is already under pressure.
Las Vegas gives the series a busy, dangerous backdrop. The Organization operates in the shadows while the characters deal with missing shifters, hostile enemies, altered identities, and the fallout from past captivity. The supernatural world is not completely safe, even for people trained to fight for it.
Kieran and Dakota remain the emotional center through the four books. Control follows them as Kieran's past resurfaces and shifters begin disappearing. Embrace pushes him to confront changes made to his DNA and the consequences of abilities that set him apart even among Day Walkers. Family brings the question of chosen family to the front as Dakota and Kieran face what it means to trust people after lives shaped by duty, isolation, and trauma.
The word bloodlines matters in two ways. It refers to the families whose descendants staff the Organization, but it also points to the question of who gets to define a person's place in the world. Several characters were shaped by institutions, birth families, or past abuse. The series asks whether they can build something better with the people they choose to keep close.
Expect paranormal romantic suspense with a continuing storyline. The romance between Kieran and Dakota develops across the books, and the larger threats build from one installment to the next. There are darker elements involving kidnapping, torture, and violence, handled as part of the characters' histories and ongoing danger.
Begin with Bite. This is not the best series to sample out of order, because Kieran's history, Dakota's role in the Organization, and the central conflict all carry directly into the later books.
