Series background & context
Kay Hooper’s Bishop/Special Crimes Unit novels combine crime investigations with psychic abilities. Noah Bishop works within the FBI and brings together investigators whose gifts allow them to perceive things ordinary police work cannot reach. Those abilities can help locate victims, interpret disturbing experiences or track a killer, but they also expose the people using them to dangers that are difficult to explain to anyone outside the team.
The series opens with Stealing Shadows, in which Cassie Neill leaves Los Angeles after a terrible mistake and hopes to find peace in a small North Carolina town. Instead, she senses a murderer nearby. Her predicament establishes an important tension: knowledge obtained through a psychic gift may be urgent and accurate, yet convincing other people to act on it is another problem entirely.
A gift can also become a vulnerability.
Hiding in the Shadows follows Faith Parker after she wakes from a coma with her memory missing, while Out of the Shadows completes the opening sequence. The books gradually establish the connected world surrounding Bishop rather than presenting a fully assembled unit from the first page. Publication order lets readers encounter that development as it happens and recognise the relationships that carry into later investigations.
As the series continues, the cases move among different communities and bring different investigators forward. Small towns, mountain country and isolated locations can put witnesses far from immediate help and give criminals room to hide. The supernatural element sits alongside recognisable investigative pressures: people disappear, suspects conceal their intentions, and agents must work out whom to believe before another person is hurt. The central aim remains stopping human violence, even when the route to understanding it is unusual.
The later novels also involve Haven, an organisation whose operatives work in the same wider world as the Special Crimes Unit. In Hostage, Haven operative Luther Brinkman’s search for an escaped bank robber takes him into the Appalachian wilderness, where SCU agent Callie Davis becomes involved. Their situation shows how an investigation can turn into a struggle to survive, with the hunters discovering that their target has dangers they did not anticipate.
These are paranormal suspense novels with violent threats, uneasy perceptions and relationships shaped by risk. The investigators must use their abilities without assuming that a vision or impression gives them every answer. Readers following the books in order gain a growing sense of Bishop’s network and the different ways its members work, while each case supplies its own immediate uncertainty. The tension comes from the gap between sensing that something is wrong and finding a way to prevent it.
