Fangirl Down

by Tessa Bailey

2024

Washed-up golf star Wells Whitaker has one loyal fan left: Josephine Doyle, the redhead who cheers every disastrous round. After a hurricane ruins her pro shop, he begs her to be his caddy and partner in a comeback, turning rivals of circumstance into lovers on and off the course.

Series background & context

Big Shots is a sports romance playground, each book following a different professional athlete whose high-profile career collides with a heroine who refuses to be impressed by stats alone. The series ranges from pro golf to hockey and baseball, but the through line is big feelings, bigger attraction, and plenty of locker-room-adjacent banter.

Fangirl Down kicks things off on the golf course. Wells Whitaker was once the sport’s hottest rising star; now he’s known mostly for his temper and his hangovers. The one constant in the stands is Josephine Doyle, the redheaded “Wells Bell” who cheers for him even when no one else does. When a hurricane wipes out her family’s pro shop and her finances, Wells shows up with a wild proposal: she’ll become his caddy and help him claw his way back to the top, and they’ll split his winnings.

Their road-trip partnership forces them into constant proximity—shared hotel walls, long days on the green, and nights where comfort and chemistry get tangled. Josephine, who has spent her life proving she can handle everything alone despite chronic illness, must learn to accept care. Wells has to relearn the game without self-destruction and figure out whether his biggest risk is on the course or in Josephine’s direction.

The Au Pair Affair moves onto the ice. Tallulah is a broke, big-hearted marine-biology student who takes a job as live-in nanny to the daughter of Burgess, a battle-scarred hockey enforcer freshly out of his marriage. She’s wary of men; he’s wary of wanting anything beyond being a good father. As she helps his shy tween navigate a new school and a complicated family situation, Burgess leans on Tallulah more and more, blurring the line between employer and something much more intimate.

In Dream Girl Drama, a chance breakdown at an exclusive country club leads pro hockey player Sig Gauthier straight into the path of Chloe Clifford, a whimsical, chaos-friendly harpist who feels like his personal manic pixie dream girl. A stolen kiss sets sparks flying—until they discover that Sig’s father is engaged to Chloe’s mother, making them future step-siblings. Determined to keep things “appropriate,” they try for friendship while he quietly teaches her how to live on her own terms, far from her mother’s control.

Pitcher Perfect widens the lens to include baseball, following Boston Bearcats rookie Robbie Corrigan and Division I softball pitcher Skylar Paige. She thinks he’s an unserious, womanizing player; he’s secretly dazzled by her and volunteers to help her win over her longtime crush at a family competition. Fake dating in the woods, competitive games, and intense pitching lessons quickly give way to something real.

Upcoming installments like Catch Her If You Can continue the theme with more teammates, burlesque club owners, and marriages of convenience. Through it all, Big Shots keeps its focus on characters learning to be good teammates off the field as well as on it.
