Mouth to Mouth

by Tessa Bailey

2018

Ex-con lifeguard Rory Prince knows he should steer clear of Olive Cunningham, the curious college student newly unleashed on the world. Instead he keeps saving her from near disasters and falling for the girl who stubbornly believes he’s worth more than his record says.

Series background & context

Beach Kingdom whisks readers to Long Beach, New York, where the Prince siblings run a bar, guard the shoreline, and try very hard—usually unsuccessfully—to keep their hearts out of trouble. The series blends summer heat, family drama, and the kind of boardwalk atmosphere that smells like sunscreen and fried dough.

Mouth to Mouth introduces Rory Prince, the rough-edged brother with a prison record and a reputation he doesn’t think he’ll ever outrun. He knows he should stay away from Olive Cunningham, the sweet, homeschooled college student who keeps almost getting herself into dangerous situations. Instead, he keeps hauling her out of trouble and falling harder every time. Olive, who has lived most of her life through books, treats Rory like the hero of her own adventure, forcing him to believe he might deserve more than the role of town delinquent.

In Heat Stroke, middle brother Jamie Prince is a buttoned-up lifeguard and private school teacher who has no patience for nonsense. Marcus “Diesel” O’Shaughnessy is nonsense personified: a loud, cheerful CrossFit junkie with a swimsuit tan and a naked-lady tattoo. Both men are working the same stretch of beach, both are hiding parts of themselves, and neither can stay away from the other. Their slow-burn male/male romance explores internalized shame, performance, and the terrifying hope that maybe you’ve finally found someone who sees all of you.

Sink or Swim focuses on eldest sibling Andrew, the one who wakes up before dawn to schedule bar shifts, police the lifeguard crew, and quietly shoulder the family’s financial mess. He’s been in love with girl-next-door Jiya Dalal since childhood but has convinced himself she’s better off without his baggage. Jiya, meanwhile, dreams of becoming a pilot and of finally getting stubborn Andrew to admit he feels what she feels. A moonlit tryst, old guilt, and parental expectations all collide as they decide whether friendship is really safer than the all-in love they both crave.

Beach Kingdom’s charm lies in its mix of sun-drenched escapism and real-world stakes. The lifeguard stand is both a literal and figurative lookout point, where characters scan the horizon for riptides and also for the emotional trouble headed their way. The Prince siblings bicker, meddle, and close ranks when it counts, giving the trilogy a strong family spine.

Expect lifeguard drills, boardwalk bars, late-night swims, and plenty of steam. Underneath the tan lines and surf, though, the series keeps asking the same question: what does it mean to stay, really stay, for a place and a person when running has always felt safer?
