In Cantina Valley, a lawyer named Maggi McGuffin shows up with an offer Ben would probably rather refuse. She can help with his IRS and EPA problems if he agrees to look into what is happening in the valley. That setup is classic mystery material, a reluctant investigator, a place that seems ordinary until it very clearly is not, and a local web of agendas that grows more dangerous the deeper he goes.

What makes the series appealing is Ben himself. He has the background to ask hard questions and read people carefully, but he is not approaching the case as an active government operator anymore. That gives the books a looser, more off-grid feel. The valley, the rural setting, and the odd collection of locals all become part of the mystery.

There is also a nice mix of tones here. The books can feel like regional noir, but they also leave room for eccentric characters and a sense that something slightly off is happening beneath the obvious crime. You are not just following clues. You are feeling out a place.
