One Night with the Duke

by Jodi Ellen Malpas

2022

In Regency London, independent Eliza Melrose would rather write for her father’s newspaper than find a husband. Investigating the scandal-clouded Duke of Chester for a story, she is drawn into his dark rumours, his guarded heart, and a forbidden, blazing attraction.

Series background & context

Belmore Square is Jodi Ellen Malpas’s first historical series, set in Regency-era London but laced with the same bold, character-driven romance that powers her contemporary books. The stories follow the Melrose siblings, the children of a successful newspaper and printing magnate who has recently moved the family into fashionable Belmore Square.

In One Night with the Duke, independent-minded Eliza Melrose would rather chase stories for her father’s paper than chase a husband. The sudden return of the scandal-shrouded Duke of Chester to the house across the square gives her both a mystery and an irresistible subject. Rumours say he killed his family; the man Eliza meets is brooding, fiercely protective, and far more complex than society gossips allow.

The second book, A Gentleman Never Tells, focuses on Eliza’s brother Frank, a former rake trying to prove himself in the family business. Pressured to unmask a notorious highwayman for the newspaper, he clashes, and gradually conspires, with dazzling Taya Winters, whose own secrets wind through the very crimes he is investigating.

Across the series, Malpas plays with questions of class, reputation, and who gets to control the narrative in a city obsessed with appearances.

Expect ballroom scenes and carriage rides, but also printing presses, gossip columns, and heroines who are far more interested in shaping their own futures than in being quietly decorative. Belmore Square is a good fit if you like Bridgerton-style settings but want the emotional punch and sensuality of Malpas’s contemporary work.
