The Bedlam's Bard books begin with one of the stranger and more appealing setups in this universe. Eric Banyon is a talented but drifting musician, playing flute and trying to get through the day, when his music accidentally frees an elven noble from magical imprisonment. That moment in Knight of Ghosts and Shadows changes everything. Eric learns that music can carry real power, that elves are painfully real, and that California's hidden magical politics have just landed in his lap.

From there, the series grows outward. Summoned to Tourney raises the stakes from Eric's personal survival to the fate of the whole coast. Bedlam Boyz, written by Ellen Guon, turns sideways for a while to follow Kayla, a runaway with a healing gift, and shows how dangerous this world can be for young people without protection. Later books move Eric to New York, widen the cast, and link the bardic storyline more closely with Guardians, dark Sidhe plots, and the other corners of the Elves on the Road setting.

Music is the heart of it.
