Bedknobs and Broomsticks is Josh Lanyon's answer to the question, what if a cozy mystery had witches, social politics, and a hero who is trying very hard not to let magic ruin his personal life? The series centers on Cosmo Saville, an antiques dealer with a secret connection to the supernatural, and John Joseph Galbraith, a police commissioner who is practical, protective, and definitely not looking for enchanted complications.

Cosmo lives in a world where spells, grimoires, cursed objects, and magical rivalries are real, but they are not treated like shiny fantasy wallpaper. They create actual problems. In Mainly by Moonlight, a stolen book of spells, a murder charge, and a looming wedding push Cosmo into exactly the kind of crisis he would rather avoid. The books that follow keep that same balance of charm and pressure.

What makes the series fun is the contrast. Cosmo's hidden world can be absurd, dangerous, and occasionally very glamorous. John's world is law, order, and facts. Put them together and you get a lot of friction, some dry humor, and a romance that has to survive both ordinary trust issues and the awkward reality that one partner is keeping supernatural secrets.

The tone is lighter than Lanyon's darkest suspense, but the books still have stakes. Murder is murder, even when the suspect list includes people with arcane hobbies. There is also a nice streak of domestic comedy running through the series, because Cosmo is not the sort of hero who meets disaster without commentary.

If you like cozy mysteries but want a little more magic, more adult romantic tension, and a series that knows how silly and serious witches can be at the same time, Bedknobs and Broomsticks is an easy recommendation.
