Holiday Codas Books in Order

The Holiday Codas books are exactly what the name promises, short Christmas and winter follow-ups to earlier Josh Lanyon stories. But calling them add-ons undersells them a little. These pieces are less about solving new mysteries than about checking in on characters after the dust has settled, or at least after the previous dust storm has turned into holiday weather.

That means the pleasure here is different from the main novels and series. A coda gives readers what the original story often could not pause long enough to show. You get aftermath. You get domestic friction, jokes, tenderness, maybe an old wound poked once more, and then some sense of how a couple looks when they are trying to make ordinary life work.

Collections like Christmas Waltz and All I Want for Christmas gather those visits in one place, often alongside recipes and small extras. A Winter Romance continues that tradition. The mood changes from story to story because the couples come from different corners of Lanyon's catalog. Some are funny. Some are wistful. Some are quietly sexy. A few are a little bittersweet because that is simply how she writes even happy people.

These books are best if you already know the characters, but they are also a nice reminder of one of Lanyon's strengths. She writes relationships as ongoing things, not as prizes handed out when the mystery ends. The murder may be solved, the stalker caught, the secret exposed, and yet the two people at the center of the story still have to figure out Christmas dinner, family expectations, travel plans, grief, trust, or whether they are actually ready to stay.

If you love the couples as much as the crimes, the Holiday Codas are where that side of the work gets to breathe a little.
