Series background & context
The Bedeviled series follows Angel Garret, a middle-schooler whose life gets much stranger when she discovers that her absent father is the Devil. Her mother had warned her about him for years, but Angel never expected the warning to be literal. Now her dad, Lou Cipher, wants to get to know her, and he comes with the kind of supernatural power that can make almost any wish happen.
Angel is not sure she wants any of it. She wants a real dad, not a shortcut to popularity or a magical fix for every awkward moment in her life. But school is already full of temptations, from trying to impress her crush, Cole, to navigating friendships and the pressure to fit in. Having access to devilish powers only makes every decision more complicated.
And Angel has powers of her own.
The series starts with Daddy's Little Angel, then continues through The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Dress, Careful What You Wish For, and Love Struck. The books are best read in order because Angel's relationship with her father, her growing abilities, and the consequences of earlier choices all carry forward. Each installment gives her a new mess to handle, but the emotional thread stays the same: Angel is trying to decide what kind of person she wants to be.
The magic is used for comic trouble rather than heavy horror. Wishes can backfire, emotions can get the better of Angel, and an attempt to help a friend may turn into a disaster. At the same time, the stories keep one foot in familiar tween concerns, including dances, school events, crushes, parents, and shifting friendships.
Lou is a key part of the tension. He can be a father who wants closeness with his daughter, but he is also the Devil, with a long history and powers Angel cannot fully trust. That push and pull gives the series its central question: can Angel build a relationship with him without losing control of her own life?
Bedeviled is a light paranormal series with a fast pace and plenty of everyday embarrassment. It works well for readers who like middle-school stories where the biggest problems involve friends and feelings, except this time there is also magic, temptation, and a dad from the underworld.
