Series background & context

Aviva Fleischer is the kind of heroine who looks like she has her life under control right up until the minute it explodes. She is ambitious, competent, and climbing the ranks of the Maccabees, a supernatural law-enforcement force. She is also hiding the one thing that could destroy everything she has worked for, her infernal side. Aviva calls that part of herself Cherry Bomb, which tells you a lot about the tone before page twenty.

Avi wants the promotion. The universe wants fireworks.

Big Demon Energy drops her into a murder investigation at the same moment she is forced to partner with Ezra Cardoso, the vampire ex who broke her heart years earlier. That setup powers the whole series. Each book brings a new case, new magical trouble, and new reasons Avi and Ezra should absolutely not still be orbiting each other. Naturally, they keep orbiting each other. What starts as professional irritation and old resentment turns into one of Wilde's better second-chance romances, partly because both characters know exactly where to wound the other.

The cases keep escalating in a satisfying way. Demon on Deck moves the action to a deadly gaming hall on a yacht. Better the Demon You Know folds in black ops pressure, corruption charges, and family danger. Demon in Disguise raises the temperature again with undercover work, civic tension, and a sinister plot tied to demons and vampires. By the time The Demon's Due arrives, the series is playing for apocalypse-sized stakes, but it still keeps one eye on the people at the center of the damage.

That balance is what makes the books work. Avi is not just dealing with monsters and murder. She is also managing secrets, family strain, professional ambition, and the constant fear that one wrong move will expose who and what she really is. The humor is sharp, the pacing is quick, and the romance is spicy, but the emotional hook comes from watching Avi decide whether survival is enough or whether she wants a fuller life than that.

The world building has a Jewish texture without slowing the story down. Even the name Maccabees carries history, and the idea of sacred flame feeding modern magic gives the series a nice grounded weirdness. Vancouver is another big part of the atmosphere. Rainy streets, urban hideouts, and hidden supernatural politics make the city feel like a real pressure cooker.

If you like murder mysteries with teeth, heroines who weaponize sarcasm, and romance that keeps punching through professional common sense, Bedeviled AF is a good fit. It is a little darker and more procedural than some of Wilde's other series, but it still has the same appeal: clever women, messy feelings, and magic that never stays politely in the background.
