Series background & context

Beautiful Delusions is Maggie Cole's psychological dark romance duet, and it sits in a different emotional register from almost everything else she writes. It is still full of intense chemistry, but the tension here comes from obsession, ethics, power, and how badly two people can want each other even when they know they should not go there.

This one is about the same couple, so order matters.

The central pair is Blue Ivanov and Dr. Red Mercer, and the setup is as messy as it sounds. Blue is not positioned as a harmless patient drifting into a crush. Red is not written as a tidy professional hero. The whole duet leans into morally gray choices, blurred boundaries, and the kind of psychological pull that gets more dangerous the longer it goes on.

Resisting Blue introduces that dynamic and makes it clear this is not meant to feel safe or balanced. Chasing Red then takes the same emotional knot and tightens it, especially once distance, secrecy, and the attempt to walk away only make the obsession worse. The story is romance, but it is romance under pressure from mental strain, compulsion, and the knowledge that these two people can hurt each other badly.

That is the appeal if this is your lane. The duet is not trying to soften its premise into something conventional. It is darker, more intimate, and more psychologically loaded than Cole's billionaire or holiday books, and even darker in a different way than the mafia series because the danger is not only external.

Start with Resisting Blue and expect the emotional intensity to climb. Readers who like stalker energy, taboo attraction, and love stories that stare directly at bad decisions instead of sidestepping them will probably understand fast why this duet has its own corner of Cole's catalog.
