Bad Day Books in Order

The Bad Day books follow Stella Hardesty, a Missouri widow who runs a sewing shop and, unofficially, helps women whose husbands or boyfriends have made home dangerous. That setup gives the series its hook right away. Stella is practical, stubborn, funny in a dry way, and very willing to do things the legal system does not always manage to do.

She is not a polite puzzle-solver.

Stella survives because she knows what fear looks like from the inside. Her own abusive marriage shaped her, and the books never let that history turn into a gimmick. Instead, it becomes the reason she understands both rage and shame so well. Prosper, Missouri, matters too. It is the kind of place where everybody knows everybody, gossip travels fast, and old loyalties can be as dangerous as old grudges.

The first novel, A Bad Day for Sorry, brings Stella into orbit with young mother Chrissy Shaw and a missing child. From there the series widens without losing its small-town roots. A Bad Day for Pretty mixes murder with tornado wreckage and demolition-derby chaos. A Bad Day for Scandal sends Stella and Chrissy after a missing woman whose secrets stretch past Prosper. A Bad Day for Mercy pulls Stella into family trouble in Wisconsin. A Bad Day for Romance drops her into wedding week mayhem and another messy killing.

One of the pleasures of the series is the recurring cast. Chrissy grows from frightened client to capable partner. Sheriff Goat Jones stands on the other side of Stella's methods, drawn to her, frustrated by her, and often a step behind her. Stella's love life never takes over the books, but it does add some sparks and some complications. So does the constant question underneath every case: when the system fails, what are you allowed to do about it?

These books sit in a nice space between mystery, thriller, and dark comedy. They can be violent, but they are also warm toward people who have been bruised by life and are still trying to do right. If you like crime series with a strong voice, a middle-aged heroine who refuses to stay in her lane, and cases that grow out of real damage, this is a good one to read in order.
