It is still romantic, but the emotional tension is sharper because the deception starts inside the marriage itself.

Across all three books, Roberts keeps returning to the same pleasures. Her heroines are stubborn and active. Her heroes may have swagger, but they still have to earn faith. The settings move from Highland roads and strongholds to the English court, yet the real thread is always loyalty. This is a connected trilogy, so returning faces and family ties matter. The books work one at a time, but they are most fun in order because you get to watch side characters step forward and old tensions shift from one romance to the next.
