Avatar: The Last Airbender Books in Order

Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world divided into four nations, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Some people can bend one of those elements. The Avatar is the one person meant to master all four and keep the world in balance.

For a hundred years, that balance has been gone.

Aang is a twelve-year-old Air Nomad who wakes from a long sleep to find that the Fire Nation has started a worldwide war and wiped out his people. Katara, a young waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe, and her brother Sokka become his first friends and traveling companions. Together, they set out across the world so Aang can learn the other elements and face Fire Lord Ozai.

The early Avatar Volume books adapt the opening episodes of the animated series in a cine-manga format, using images from the show alongside dialogue and story captions. They follow the group from Aang’s discovery in the iceberg through encounters with Prince Zuko, the abandoned Southern Air Temple, Kyoshi Island, Omashu, imprisoned earthbenders, and the Spirit World.

Prince Zuko gives the series one of its most personal conflicts. Banished by his father, he believes capturing the Avatar is the only way to regain his honor. His pursuit of Aang creates danger, but it also becomes a story about family pressure, loyalty, and whether someone can choose a better path.

The world is huge, but the group keeps it human.

Aang wants to have fun and avoid the heavy role waiting for him. Katara wants to grow into a stronger waterbender. Sokka brings practical thinking, jokes, and a healthy distrust of easy answers. Over time, their travels show why balance is more complicated than simply beating the Fire Nation.

Michael Dante DiMartino co-created the animated series with Bryan Konietzko. The books connected with this series include screen-to-page adaptations, comics set after the finale, and behind-the-scenes art collections. The best entry point for the adaptation line is Avatar Volume 1: The Last Airbender, followed in numerical order.

Readers who want the story after the television ending should move next to The Promise, Part 1. That trilogy begins the official comic continuation and shows what happens when Team Avatar has to build a peaceful world instead of only fighting to save it.
