Series background & context

The Ava James FBI Mystery series spins out of the Emma Griffin universe and follows a younger agent stepping into her own spotlight. Ava has already survived horrors before the first page, including a brush with human traffickers and a long search for a missing best friend, so she arrives on the job with scars and stubborn resilience.

When readers meet her in Ava James and the Ivy Grove, she has just finished shadowing Emma on the Windsor Island case and is ready to prove herself in a new field office near Washington, DC. Before she can settle into that role, she is invited to a lavish masked gala on Ivy Island honoring her philanthropist aunt. The weekend should be a family celebration, but a suspicious death at the event exposes secrets inside the charity that raised Ava and makes her wonder why she was really invited.

In Ava James and the Forgotten Bones, Ava is abruptly pulled off field work when her mother disappears while traveling in South Africa. To keep her from bolting after her own lead, the Bureau reassigns her to a Cold Case Initiative. Sorting through old files, she becomes obsessed with the murders tied to a house in Hidden Cove, where one couple was destroyed and another later died in the same living room. Her trip to the wintry Kentucky town shows how a supposedly quiet community can close ranks against an outsider.

The third book, The Couple Next Door, shifts the focus to a lonely widow whose grief has left her vulnerable in a large, empty house. Ava is called in when the arrival of a charming new couple seems to coincide with strange events and Kara’s grip on reality starts to look shaky. The case leans heavily into questions of gaslighting, obsession, and how far someone might go to reclaim a life they think they deserve.

Throughout the series, Ava’s cases take her from island resorts to rural neighborhoods and back to the suburbs just outside the capital. She crosses paths with Emma and Dean from time to time, but the emotional core is her struggle to build a future when parts of her past remain missing or off limits. The books balance puzzles and action with Ava’s efforts to hold on to empathy without letting it put her in the ground.

The tone is suspenseful and sometimes dark, yet grounded in Ava’s determination to keep victims from being forgotten, whether they are cold case files or people the system would rather ignore. Each entry can stand alone, though starting with Ava James and the Ivy Grove gives helpful context for her family ties and the ghosts she carries.

If you like FBI thrillers with a younger lead, locked room style setups, and a strong thread of personal stakes, Ava’s series is a natural next step after Emma Griffin.
