Crossfire

by Matt Braun

1984

After a gang steals a fortune in silver and gold, Pinkerton agent Ash Tallman heads to Red Rock, Arizona, with Vivian Valentine. Their undercover mission draws them into a ruthless outlaw band and toward the darker power directing the bloodshed from Tucson.

2

The Highbinders

by Matt Braun

1984

Ash Tallman is sent into a frontier power struggle where respectable faces hide ugly motives. To stop the men pulling strings behind the scenes, he has to work the gray ground between law, politics, and violence.

3

The Wages of Sin

by Matt Braun

1984

With a Texas cow town falling apart under outlaw attacks, Pinkerton agent Ash Tallman and his partner Vivian Valentine go undercover to smoke out a killer bent on revenge. It is a slick, dangerous game where every sinner may know something.

Series background & context

The Ash Tallman books are westerns with an undercover streak. Ash is not a drifting gunman or a ranch-born sheriff. He is a Chicago-based Pinkerton agent sent west when money has vanished, respectable men are lying, and the ordinary law is not enough to sort out the mess. The jobs often begin with a company, a bank, or a transport line in trouble. Before long, Tallman is inside a town or gang where almost everyone is acting a part.

He is at his best when the room already feels wrong.

What gives the series its spark is the partnership at the center. Ash often works with Vivian Valentine, a sharp, adaptable operative who can change names, roles, and manners as easily as other people change coats. Together they bluff, listen, tempt, and prod until the weak seams show. In Crossfire, that means going deep inside a murderous outlaw band in Arizona Territory. In The Wages of Sin, it means walking into a Texas town being terrorized into ruin and trying to find the hand behind the bloodshed.

These books are tighter and more investigative than Braun's larger family sagas. The action is still there, of course. There are robberies, ambushes, gunfights, and sudden betrayals. But the real engine is suspicion. Who is financing the violence? Which civic leader is dirtier than the outlaws? How far can Ash and Vivian go undercover before somebody decides to test them with a revolver instead of a question?

Nobody here gets to stay clean for long.

The western setting matters a lot. Braun uses cow towns, border settlements, freight routes, and boom places where the rules are still being argued over. That gives Ash Tallman the right kind of battlefield. He can move between businessmen, hired killers, gamblers, and people trying very hard to look respectable while stealing everything they can reach. The result is a series that reads almost like frontier noir, lean, fast, and suspicious of nearly everybody.

If you want the clearest way in, start with The Highbinders, then move to Crossfire and The Wages of Sin. Each novel works on its own, but in order you get the best sense of Ash's methods, Vivian's importance, and the way Braun blends western action with detective work and undercover play.
