Series background & context

The Artzy Chicks books are Judith Lucci's coziest series, but they are still proper mysteries with bodies, suspects, and plenty of small-town trouble. The setting is Massanutten Mountain in Virginia, where an art gallery, a resort crowd, local gossip, and a changing tourist season create the perfect stage for crimes that nobody expected and everybody talks about.

The core of the series is a lively group of women connected to art, friendship, and the gallery. Lily and LauraLea are at the center, and their world includes classes, crafts, local visitors, and the kind of day-to-day mountain life that can feel warm and chaotic at the same time. Lucci uses that friendly surface well. It makes the murders land harder when they break into the rhythm of ordinary work, holiday prep, or a busy tourist week.

Dr. Kenzie Zimbro, often called Kenzie Zee, gives the series one of its best balancing points. As the local medical examiner, she brings a cooler, more forensic energy into a group that otherwise runs on talk, instinct, loyalty, and community ties. Her presence keeps the series from floating away into pure whimsy. At the same time, the books never lose their cozy identity. There is humor, seasonal atmosphere, and a lot of affection for the place and its people.

The mountain setting does real work here.

A Christmas blizzard, a scorching summer, a ski slope, a gallery backyard, and even a cruise ship adventure all shape the mysteries in different ways. The Golden Rings of Christmas opens with snow, grief, and a holiday case that gives the series a surprisingly warm emotional base. Gawd Almighty and the Corn leans into summer oddness. The Jewel Heist and Death On The Slopes show how quickly a familiar local world can turn dangerous, while Missing Masterpiece lets the Artzy Chicks travel without losing the group dynamic that makes the series fun.

What carries the books from one case to the next is less the puzzle alone than the company. These are friendship-forward mysteries. The women bicker, worry, show up for each other, and keep digging even when the police would prefer they did not. The tone stays lighter than Lucci's thriller series, but the crimes still matter and the stakes still feel real.

If you want a Judith Lucci series with more charm, community, and seasonal color, this is probably the best place to start. Begin with The Golden Rings of Christmas and read forward. The recurring cast is part of the pleasure, and the mountain world gets richer each time you come back to it.
