Appalachian Books in Order

The Appalachian books are connected less by a single continuing plot and more by place, pressure, and point of view. These are historical stories set in mountain communities where family bonds run deep, outside power can do real damage, and faith is tested by the daily business of survival. Mercy's Rain opens the sequence with Mercy Roller, a young woman shaped by abuse, fear, and the twisted authority of a father who calls himself the Pastor. The book is intimate and bruising, focused on what happens when someone raised in violence tries to imagine a different life. It sets the tone for the whole group, gritty, emotional, rooted in faith, and very interested in the long road from hurt to mercy.

In Liar's Winter, the focus shifts to Lochiel Ogle, whose red-wine birthmark makes superstitious mountain people see her as cursed. Her story brings in kidnapping, hidden family ties, and the question of whether truth can heal what secrecy has damaged. The series stays interested in personal redemption, but it also shows how quickly a closed community can turn fear into cruelty.

Coal Black Lies widens the frame. Here the danger comes not just from family secrets or local superstition but from the hard economics of coal country, the Company Store, and a powerful family that keeps miners in debt and under its thumb. Joshua Morgan's grief over his daughter and his urge for revenge drive the story, while a vulnerable young girl gives the book much of its heart. It is still deeply personal, but the stakes reach farther into the life of the whole mountain.

And the mountains are never just scenery.

Across the series, Sproles writes about people who are bruised but not beaten flat. You get strong women, damaged men, children in danger, worn-down homes, church life, rough weather, and a close sense of East Tennessee and the broader Appalachian world. The tone is serious, sometimes dark, but not hopeless.
