Author bio
Annika Martin grew up around the suburbs of Chicago and Milwaukee before heading to the University of Minnesota, where she studied English literature. She now lives in Minneapolis, and that Midwestern grounding still shows up in the plainspoken humor and practicality of many of her characters.
Before books became the day job, she worked a long list of regular jobs, including waitressing, time in a plastics factory, and many years as an advertising copywriter. She has said that getting swept up by story again, through books like Outlander, the Anita Blake novels, and Bitten, helped push her back toward writing fiction seriously. That copy background also helps explain why her novels open so cleanly and move so fast.
Then fiction took over.
She wrote a couple of unpublished novels first, learned the slow way, and kept going until an agent sold her work.
Under the name Carolyn Crane, she broke in with the urban fantasy novel Mind Games, followed by more books in that world. She also wrote romantic suspense as Carolyn Crane, including Off the Edge, which won a RITA Award. Long before the billionaire comedies, she was already writing about danger, obsession, and people making risky emotional choices under pressure.
As Annika Martin, she has let herself roam. Prisoner and Hostage, written with Skye Warren, go dark and claustrophobic, with criminal heroes, trapped heroines, and a lot of tension in every scene. The Dangerous Royals books lean into mafia-family intensity, while the newer Ms. Renfield and the Inheritance Trap shows her playing with paranormal mystery and a very arrogant vampire.
Range is part of the point.
A lot of readers first meet her through Most Eligible Billionaire or The Billionaire's Wake-up-call Girl, and it is easy to see why. Those books are funny, high-concept, and a little outrageous, but the people inside them still feel human. Martin likes grumpy heroes who think they are in control and women who keep poking at that certainty until it cracks. Even when the setup is wild, a dog inheriting a company, secret wake-up calls at 4:30 a.m., a fake fiancée on a private jet, the emotional beats stay grounded.
Across pen names and subgenres, some things repeat. She likes characters under pressure. She likes men who are a bad idea and women who are smarter than they first appear. She likes power imbalances, criminal worlds, hidden softness, and the moment when a joke suddenly turns serious because somebody has started to care.
These days she still lives in Minneapolis with her writer husband and cats, and she seems happy to keep both sides of her writing life alive. One book might bring you a billionaire who cannot handle feelings. The next might bring you a vampire boss or a bank robber on the run. That mix feels very Annika Martin, playful, sharp, a little strange, and fully committed to the bit.
