Annie Ward Books in Order

Annie Ward grew up in Kansas, in and around Kansas City, and later headed to California for college. At UCLA she studied English literature with an emphasis in creative writing, and she also spent two years playing soccer for the women's team. Those two sides of her life, the bookish one and the competitive one, both show up later in her fiction.

Writing came early.

After college, Ward wrote an unpublished young adult novel, and that manuscript helped open the door to the American Film Institute, where she earned an MFA in screenwriting. While she was still at AFI, she sold her short screenplay Strange Habit. It went on to play at Sundance and win the Grand Jury Award at the Aspen Film Festival, which made for a memorable early writing credit.

Then she did something that sounds a little like the start of one of her own novels. Tired of Los Angeles and wanting a different kind of life, she moved to Eastern Europe and worked on travel guides covering Spain and Bulgaria. She stayed in Bulgaria for five years, lived through a period of civilian uprising and government change, received a Fulbright, taught at a university in Sofia, and script doctored films for a production company working in the region.

Place is never just wallpaper in her books.

That stretch of her life fed directly into The Making of June, her first published novel, which came out in 2002. The book follows an American woman in Sofia whose marriage falls apart just as the world around her grows more unstable. Readers who connect with it tend to like the strong sense of place, the messy choices, and the way June slowly becomes tougher, sadder, and more awake to the world.

Ward spent years moving between different kinds of writing and different kinds of jobs. She has worked as a cocktail server, tutor, publicity assistant, soccer coach, and gymnastics coach. That practical, seen-it-up-close experience helps explain why even her twistiest stories feel grounded in real workplaces, real family strain, and real social pressure.

Her big return to fiction came with Beautiful Bad in 2019. Ward has said the novel grew out of an abandoned memoir about her husband's work in close protection and the strain trauma can put on a marriage. In the finished book, a romance that began overseas turns tense and frightening back in Kansas. Readers often come for the murder setup, but they stay for the uneasy intimacy, the shifting timelines, and the question of what love looks like after fear moves in.

With The Lying Club, published in 2022, she turned to an elite private school in a Colorado mountain town. The novel draws on her background as an athlete, her years coaching, and her firsthand view of private school culture. The school setting is not just scenery. It lets her write about who gets believed, who gets protected, and how quickly money, charm, and status can bend the truth.

Across Ward's books, certain things keep returning. Beautiful places with trouble under the surface. Outsiders trying to find footing. Women under pressure. Relationships shaped by secrecy, class, danger, and the stories people tell themselves to get through the day.

Ward has also received Escape to Create artist residencies. After years back in Kansas, her more recent bio places her in San Miguel de Allende with her husband and two sons, and she has also written outside fiction as a contributing writer. However the setting changes, her work tends to keep one foot in lived experience and the other in trouble.
