Author bio
Penelope Ward grew up in Boston with five older brothers, and that detail feels like a useful key to her books. Her romances are often full of sharp banter, stubborn men, and women who know how to answer back. Before she wrote fiction full time, she spent most of her twenties working as a television news anchor, a career built on deadlines, pressure, and reading what people are not saying as much as what they are.
Newsrooms are loud places to learn about human behavior.
Ward began publishing in the early 2010s, and her first books quickly showed what kind of writer she was becoming. Gemini and Jake Undone both lean into intense attraction, emotional secrets, and the feeling that one unexpected person can knock a carefully managed life off balance. Those early novels also helped establish the interconnected flavor of part of her backlist, where side characters sometimes step forward into stories of their own.
Then Stepbrother Dearest gave her career a much bigger push. In 2014 it became the top-selling independently published Kindle ebook of the year, which brought a lot of new readers to her work. A couple of years later, RoomHate reached number two on The New York Times bestseller list. By that point, it was clear she was not writing one breakout hit and disappearing. She was building a real body of work.
She has since sold millions of books, become a 21-time New York Times bestseller, and written more than forty novels. Her books have also been translated into more than a dozen languages, and she has won an Audie Award. Those are big numbers, but what matters on the page is simpler: readers tend to come to Ward for strong hooks, emotional honesty, and characters who usually want the exact person they think they should avoid.
By then, she had found her lane.
Part of that lane is her solo catalog, which is packed with second chances, forbidden setups, close quarters, and complicated timing. Books like When August Ends, The Day He Came Back, The Aristocrat, and The Rocker's Muse all begin with a premise that grabs you fast, but they work because she follows through on the emotional consequences. Her stories often ask what people do with old guilt, missed chances, family pressure, or desire that would be a lot more convenient if it simply went away.
Another big part of her career is her long-running partnership with Vi Keeland. The two authors joined forces in 2015 and have written a string of popular romances together, including Cocky Bastard, Stuck-Up Suit, Dirty Letters, and The Rules of Dating. Those books are often funnier and faster on the surface, but they still carry the same emotional pull that runs through Ward's solo work.
Off the page, Ward lives in Rhode Island with her husband, son, and daughter with autism. That grounded family life matters. Even when her premises are bold, her books keep circling back to ordinary, human questions about trust, timing, forgiveness, and whether people can finally stop dodging the truth long enough to love each other well.
