Author bio
Anna Jacobs writes family sagas and relationship stories in which a change of circumstances can force people to build a life again. Lancashire and Australia recur across her fiction, connecting communities shaped by work with journeys undertaken for safety or opportunity. Her characters often need a practical way forward as much as they need affection, and their choices affect relatives, neighbors and the people who depend on them.
Jacobs grew up in Lancashire and moved to Australia in the early 1970s. Her own connection with both countries continued through return visits to England, where she has combined seeing family with research. That background gives a personal context to fiction that repeatedly moves between Britain and Australia, while the stories themselves follow characters in different periods and circumstances.
Her writing began before her novels reached publication.
She wrote French textbooks and later tried Regency romance, encouraged by her enjoyment of Georgette Heyer's books. An early manuscript became a place to learn the craft through revision, rather than an immediate publication. Persons of Rank eventually won second prize in a writing competition, bringing a cash award and publication. She also wrote fantasy under the name Shannah Jay, developing another part of her career alongside the historical and relationship fiction associated with Anna Jacobs.
Salem Street begins the Gibson family saga through Annie Gibson and a Lancashire community shaped by mill work. The new terraced housing represents an improvement for the family, but Annie's later difficulties make independence something she has to find through action. The setting ties personal hopes to employment, money and social position, giving a domestic story wider pressures without losing sight of the person trying to manage them.
The Trader's Wife opens another sequence in Singapore in the 1860s. Isabella Saunders, left without money after her mother's death, works for merchant Mr Lee before meeting Bram Deagan, who hopes to become a successful trader. Their movement toward Australia's Swan River Colony gives marriage and business a shared place in the story. The new life offers possibilities, but it also demands cooperation between people whose future is not secure simply because they have left the past behind.
Starting over rarely means starting alone.
That idea continues in the related novels, where family members face journeys of their own. Jacobs also follows migration in Farewell to Lancashire, whose central family includes Cassandra Blake and the younger sisters she has helped raise. Family obligations make decisions about departure more complicated than one person's wish for adventure. The recurring interest is in how people balance responsibilities to others with the hope of a better life for themselves.
Her novel Pride of Lancashire won the Australian Romantic Book of the Year Award in 2006. Jacobs's writing ranges from historical sagas to contemporary family stories, with a large body of novels offering several routes into her work. Her public biography describes life with her husband in Western Australia and continuing ties to England. Across the different settings, readers encounter people whose relationships develop alongside the practical work of finding security, a home and a place to belong.
