Author bio
Anita Stansfield is an American novelist known for contemporary and historical romance, especially fiction written for Latter-day Saint readers. She was born in Provo, Utah, on July 20, 1961. Her books include First Love and Forever, Towers of Brierley, The Captain of Her Heart, and The Sound of Rain. She also writes as Elizabeth D. Michaels, the name used for her Horstberg Saga.
Her writing career began long before her first book reached a shop.
Stansfield wrote her first novel at sixteen with her sister. They tried to find a publisher without success, but she continued writing and submitting work. She attended seminars and workshops while collecting rejection letters. In a local interview, she recalled that sixteen years passed between that early attempt and her first publishing contract. During those years she also married, raised children, and lived in several Utah communities before making Alpine her home.
First Love and Forever appeared in 1994 and established her in the LDS publishing market. It became part of a larger family saga rather than remaining an isolated romance. Her linked novels allow relationships, family history, and earlier choices to carry through more than one book. Faith is part of many characters' lives, but her stated interest also extends to their emotional struggles. She has described a wish to help readers think about social and personal issues through stories.
Her historical fiction reaches into different periods and settings. Towers of Brierley places its romance in Scotland and became a prequel to the Shadows of Brierley books. The Captain of Her Heart belongs to the Buchanan Saga, another connected sequence. These stories give her room to combine romance with family secrets, danger, and the search for a secure home. Alongside them, contemporary series such as the Jayson Wolfe books explore relationships across several volumes, allowing characters' difficulties to develop over time.
Stansfield has worked with Covenant Communications and published through her own Crosswalk Books. A 2004 report discussed her decision to release The Captain of Her Heart through Crosswalk after Covenant declined it. Her career therefore includes both established publishing arrangements and work she brought to readers herself. Recognition within her writing community includes a Whitney Lifetime Achievement Award for 2007, presented at the program's first awards ceremony in 2008.
The Horstberg Saga was a project she carried for decades.
Under the Elizabeth D. Michaels name, Stansfield introduced that saga with Behind the Mask. The story follows Abbi, whose dreams lead her toward Cameron, an exiled man with a secret tied to a country suffering under tyranny. Romance develops within a broader conflict about identity, freedom, and political power. Stansfield has explained that the series began taking shape when she was young and evolved alongside her other novels. Publishing it fulfilled a longstanding wish to reach beyond the particular religious market where she first became established.
Family and faith remain central to Stansfield's public accounts of her life. She has five children and has spoken candidly about balancing writing with motherhood and personal challenges. Her current author catalog brings her work under both names together, separating LDS-themed books from other releases and identifying the connected sagas. That catalog offers readers several ways into a career built around love, loss, emotional recovery, and relationships that continue beyond a first meeting.
