Anita Abriel Books in Order

Anita Abriel was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up in a household where family history was close at hand. Her Hungarian grandparents lived with the family, and their language, food, and memories gave the past a daily presence.

By the time she was eight, she knew she wanted to be a writer. As a child, she heard pieces of her family's wartime history, but one story her mother shared when Abriel was eleven made the past feel especially personal. She carried those stories with her for years.

She studied English literature at Bard College, with a minor in creative writing. That mix of reading closely and making up stories gave her a practical foundation, but her route to publishing was not a straight line.

The material stayed with her.

Before becoming a novelist, Abriel spent 22 years raising her children. She began writing in her late forties, then published contemporary women's fiction under the name Anita Hughes. That work gave her room for romance, travel, friendships, and the occasional glossy escape.

A more personal direction arrived with The Light After the War. The novel grew from her mother's experience as a young Jewish woman who survived the Holocaust with her best friend. Abriel used her maiden name for the book because the story made her feel close to her mother, and because it marked a new chapter in her writing life.

The novel follows Vera and Edith from wartime Europe into the uncertain years that follow, with Naples, New York, and Caracas among the places where they try to begin again. In Lana's War, she turns to occupied France and a grieving woman recruited into the resistance. A Girl During the War / The Italian Girl moves through Rome and Florence, where art, friendship, and danger shape young Marina Tozzi's choices.

Her later historical novels explore different eras but keep the focus on women trying to make a life on their own terms. The Life She Wanted follows an aspiring dress designer in 1920s New York. The Philadelphia Heiress centers on a young woman whose family's scandal pushes her toward a marriage of convenience. American Housewife heads to 1950s television, where Maggie Lane's carefully polished public image begins to collide with the truth of her private life.

Across these books, Abriel returns to questions of loss, reinvention, family loyalty, ambition, and the gap between what a woman is expected to do and what she wants for herself. Her settings may range from wartime Europe to New York society, but the pressure is often intimate and personal.

Abriel lives in California with her family. She continues to write historical fiction under the Anita Abriel name while maintaining a separate contemporary-fiction career as Anita Hughes.
