One of the nice things about this pair of books is how the worldbuilding supports the romance. Angel society has ranks, rulers, punishments, and sharp ideas about who belongs with whom. Human life is not safer, just different. People are haunted by the past in a literal way, and by old choices in an emotional one. Penelope uses all of that to keep the books moving. Even when the stories are tender, there is always a sense that somebody is being watched, judged, or hunted.

The tone sits in a sweet spot between moody paranormal drama and fast, accessible romance. These are not giant doorstoppers. They move quickly, focus on feeling, and still make room for a bigger mythos of souls, second chances, and forbidden bonds. If you like your romance with angels, ghosts, and a little ache in it, the Angelborn books are easy to sink into.
